Mycobacterium abscessus subspecies massiliense infections associated with stem cell treatment clinics in Mexico.
In late 2022, three patients from Arizona and Colorado developed serious infections after receiving donor embryonic stem cell injections for various conditions, including multiple sclerosis, psoriatic arthritis, and osteoarthritis.
Whole genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis identified clonal isolates, indicating a common source of infection likely related to stem cell procedures.
Public health agencies in Colorado and Arizona are investigating these cases, highlighting the significant risks associated with medical tourism for treatments not approved by the FDA.
The report underscores the need for vigilance and proper guidance for individuals considering medical procedures abroad to prevent similar outbreaks in the future.
