Pandemic Preparedness, One Health

  • India is taking a "One Health" approach, recognizing that the health of humans, animals, and the environment are all connected.

  • The National One Health Mission (NOHM) brings together 13 government departments to work on disease prevention and preparedness.

  • The Key Actions taken:

  1. Stronger Labs - A high-tech labs (BSL-3) network has been set up to test for dangerous pathogens.

  2. Joint Outbreak Response—A special team has been formed to respond quickly to disease outbreaks in humans, animals, and wildlife.

  3. Better Surveillance - The disease surveillance system (IDSP) improves with real-time data and faster response teams.

  4. More Trained Experts -  Training programs are being conducted to build a skilled workforce for outbreak response.

  5. The successful control of the Nipah outbreak in Kerala demonstrated the effectiveness of this coordinated approach.

  • Significant funds have been allocated under the PM-ABHIM scheme to foster disease control and pandemic preparedness and upgrade healthcare facilities for future health emergencies.
