  • The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is India’s Standards Body, which aims to address the need for reliable and standard medical assistive technology.

  • The Bureua is developing standards for affordable, innovative assistive technology like therapeutic footwear, braille displays, portable ramps, and fall detectors.

  • Aligned with the National Medical Device Policy, 2023, BIS is currently prioritizing development of standards for 214 critical devices (e.g., septal closure devices, plasma sterilizers) for phased completion by December 2025.

  • BIS aims to enhance healthcare safety, quality, and reliability through robust device and service standards aligned with the Medical Devices Rules, 2017.

  • Over 1,700 standards have been published, including 1,200 for life-saving devices,  advanced diagnostics, and assistive technology.

  • These ensure Indian medical devices are globally competitive.
