  • NGOs Toxics Link and World Animal Protection International, dedicated to environmental action and animal protection, respectively, conducted a lab-based study on antimicrobial resistance in poultry farms in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

  • The report released had the following salient points: -

  1. Analysis of 14 poultry litter and groundwater samples from 6 poultry farms revealed antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) against 15 crucial antibiotics.

  2. Despite recommendations by the Bureau of Indian Standards, antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) were used indiscriminately in feed.

  3. Also, colistin, a banned antibiotic for use in food-producing animals, was being sold online.

  • Experts have called for integrating animal welfare into national and state plans against AMR, monitoring the use of antibiotics, and having sound and environmentally safe waste disposal techniques.
